Título: Integrating bio-economic data and stakeholders’ knowledge for sustainable anchovy fisheries in the Gulf of Cadiz
Resumen: This presentation outlines an integrated approach to sustainable fisheries management, emphasizing the need to balance ecological health, economic viability, and social equity. Focusing on the anchovy fishery in the gulf of Cádiz (south European waters), which faced quota reductions and fishing suspensions after a 2024 stock redefinition, the project addresses the resulting socio-economic impacts and stakeholder distrust. The BioEcon4Fish project introduces a holistic methodology structured around four key areas: co-creation of management strategies with stakeholders, population dynamics modeling, bioeconomic assessments, and transparent communication of results. Central to the approach is stakeholder engagement through participatory processes, ensuring management measures are ecologically sound, socially acceptable, and economically feasible. By integrating scientific data with fishers’ and policymakers’ perspectives, the project models account for real-world complexities like environmental variability and market changes. A diverse interdisciplinary team collaborated to align objectives and develop a cohesive framework. The project highlights the importance of fostering trust, transparency, and dialogue to bridge gaps between science, policy, and practice. By giving equal importance to the human dimension, the data and modeling, and communication, we aim to set a precedent for fisheries management that is inclusive of diverse perspectives, and capable of balancing ecological, economic, and social objectives.
